Custom draperies and curtains bring softness, scale, privacy, and architectural finish to a room. At Sugar & Spice Draperies and Shades LLC, we design and fabricate custom drapery solutions for homes in League City, Houston, and neighboring areas, with careful attention to how each treatment should look, function, and feel within the space.

Whether you are dressing large living room windows, adding softness to a bedroom, framing a formal dining room, or completing a layered window treatment design, custom draperies allow the finished result to feel intentional rather than added after the fact.

Draperies That Bring Softness, Scale, and Structure to a Room

Draperies do more than cover a window. They change the way a room feels.

The right drapery treatment can soften hard architecture, add visual height, create balance around large windows, improve privacy, and help a space feel more complete. In rooms with tall ceilings, open living areas, formal architecture, or large expanses of glass, draperies add the proportion and presence that standard window draperies cannot always achieve.

Because every home is different, our process is built around the room itself. We consider window size, ceiling height, wall space, natural light, privacy needs, furniture placement, and how the room is used before recommending a direction.

What Our Custom Drapery Service Includes

Our custom drapery service is designed for projects where the details matter, from the first fabric conversation to the final installation.

Depending on the project, your drapery plan may include:

  • Fabric selection
  • Lining and interlining guidance
  • Light filtering
  • Decorative hardware guidance
  • Project specific fabrication
  • Functional or stationary panel design
  • Drapery panels for tall, wide, or specialty windows
  • Motorized drapery track options when appropriate
  • Installation coordination

The goal is not simply to choose fabric and hang panels. The goal is to create a treatment that fits the window, supports the way the room is used, and feels connected to the overall design of the home.

Custom Drapery Styles & Options

Every drapery project begins with the room, but the final design is shaped by the details. Pleat style, fabric weight, lining, hardware, and function all influence how the treatment looks and performs.

Pleat Styles

Pleat style affects the overall personality of the drapery. Some styles feel more structured and traditional, while others create a cleaner, more relaxed line. Common options may include:

  • Pinch pleat draperies
  • Euro pleat draperies
  • Ripplefold draperies
  • 3-Fold (Triple Pinch Pleat)
  • 2-Fold (Double Pinch / Tailored Pleat)

The right choice depends on the room’s architecture, the fabric selected, the desired fullness, and whether the panels are intended to function regularly or remain stationary.

Sheer Draperies

Sheer draperies are often used when a room needs softness and filtered light rather than full privacy. They can create a lighter, more graceful look while still helping a window feel dressed and finished.

Sheers may be used on their own or layered with other draperies depending on the room’s privacy and light control needs.

Lining and Interlining

Lining is one of the most important decisions in a custom drapery project. It enhances the frabric’s drapability and affects how much light passes through, how much privacy the treatment provides, and how finished the draperies appear from both inside and outside the home.

Decorative Hardware

Hardware is part of the design, not an afterthought. Rods, rings, brackets, and finials should support the scale of the treatment and the style of the room.

For some rooms, decorative hardware becomes a visible design detail. In other spaces, a more understated approach may be the better fit.

Motorized Drapery Tracks

For large windows, tall windows, layered treatments, or hard-to-reach areas, motorized drapery tracks may be worth considering. Motorization can make it easier to manage light and privacy throughout the day while preserving the look of a custom drapery design.

Functional vs. Stationary Drapery Panels

Not every drapery panel needs to open and close. Some are designed primarily for function, while others are created to frame the window and finish the room visually.

Functional Drapery Panels

Functional panels are made to move. They are a strong fit for rooms where privacy, sun control, or evening coverage matters. Bedrooms, living rooms, media rooms, and large glass doors may benefit from functional draperies.

When panels are functional, details like fabric weight, lining, fullness, hardware, and stack-back space become especially important.

Stationary Drapery Panels

Stationary panels are designed to soften and frame the window without fully covering it. They can add height, color, texture, and balance while allowing shades or other treatments to handle privacy and light control.

This is often a beautiful choice when the room needs a more finished look, but the window does not require full drapery coverage every day.

Draperies for Wide, Tall, and Large-Scale Windows

Large windows need careful planning. A treatment that works well on a standard window may not have the right scale, fullness, or support for a tall or wide opening.

For homes with high ceilings, two-story spaces, large living room windows, or expansive glass, custom draperies can help bring the room into proportion. The design must account for fabric weight, panel width, ceiling height, mounting location, hardware strength, and how the draperies will be operated.

This is where custom work matters most. A large window treatment should not feel undersized, difficult to use, or disconnected from the room. It should feel like it belongs there.

When Custom Draperies Are the Right Choice

Custom draperies are often the right choice when a room needs more than coverage. They are selected when the window treatment needs to contribute to the architecture, soften the space, manage light, create privacy, and help the room feel complete.

They are especially well-suited for large windows, tall ceilings, formal living spaces, primary bedrooms, dining rooms, open-concept rooms, and areas where scale matters. In these spaces, manufactured or ready made panels often fall short because the length, fullness, fabric quality, lining, and hardware are not designed around the room itself.

A custom approach allows each detail to be considered together: window size, ceiling height, wall space, fabric weight, lining, hardware, fullness, and how the draperies should function day to day.

Custom draperies may not be the right fit for a temporary or lowest-cost window covering. They are best suited for projects where the finished result matters and where the details need to feel intentional from consultation through installation.

What the Custom Drapery Process Looks Like

A custom drapery project begins with a conversation about the room, the windows, and what you want the finished treatment to accomplish.

Initial Contact

After you reach out, we gather basic details about the project. If helpful, rough measurements and photos may be used to provide an early sense of direction before an in-home consultation is scheduled.

In-Home Consultation

During the consultation, we review the space, discuss design goals, look at fabric and treatment options, and consider practical needs such as privacy, light control, window size, mounting location, and how the draperies should function.

The current in-home consultation fee is $250.

Design Direction and Estimate

Once the details are reviewed, we prepare recommendations based on the room, selected materials, fabrication needs, and installation requirements.

75% down payment is required before materials are ordered and fabrication begins.

Fabrication

Your draperies are custom fabricated to fit the approved design, measurements, fabric, lining, and functional requirements.

Typical project timing is approximately 8 weeks, depending on material availability, project scope, and scheduling.

Installation

Sugar & Spice coordinates all installation-related appointments. Once the installation is complete, the remaining balance is due.

Crafted Through a Full-Service Workroom Approach

Sugar & Spice brings together design guidance, fabrication knowledge, and installation coordination so the finished treatment feels considered from start to finish.

Rather than simply ordering panels, our process considers the proportions of the room, the way the fabric will hang, the lining needed for the space, the custom hardware required to support the treatment, and the final installation details that affect how the draperies look once they are in place.

This level of detail also supports projects where the drapery plan is part of a broader design vision. When fabric, measurements, pattern placement, lining, fullness, and installation details need to be executed with care, the workroom process helps protect the integrity of the finished room.
